Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as an asset here?
Anything with real market value: cash and savings, taxable investments, retirement accounts, the current market value of real estate (not what you paid for it), vehicles at resale value, and any other significant assets. Leave out things without a real resale market, like most furniture or personal items.
Should I use my home's purchase price or its current value?
Current market value -- what it would actually sell for today, not what you paid. Overestimating this is the most common way people inflate their own net worth calculation.
Where does the reference table come from?
Federal Reserve, Survey of Consumer Finances 2022 (published in the Federal Reserve Bulletin, October 2023). It's median net worth by the age of the head of household from the Federal Reserve's own nationally representative survey -- not this site's data, and not updated by anything you enter above.
Why median instead of average?
Average net worth is skewed dramatically upward by a small number of very high-net-worth households; median (the middle value) is a far more representative figure for where a typical household actually stands, which is why the Federal Reserve itself leads with median in its own reporting.
Is net worth the same as retirement readiness?
Not directly -- net worth includes illiquid assets like home equity that aren't easily spent in retirement, and doesn't account for future income needs. The retirement savings calculator checks your liquid retirement accounts specifically against a spending target.
